Invitation to Explore Hampshire Attraction. New Facilities on Show.

2/12/2018

Gilbert White and the Oates Collections. Monday 25th June.

Gilbert White and the Oates Collections is a fascinating museum in the idyllic Hampshire village of Selborne.

It’s famous for its intrepid explorers and Gilbert White’s ground-breaking investigation of the natural world.

Now it’s better than ever as it is soon to complete its extensive and ambitious development programme – making the attraction even more popular for groups of visitors.

Monday 25th June at 11.00 am is the date for coach and tour operators, group travel organisers to head to Hampshire.

Tour planners will be able to sample the brand new café, shop, visitor area along with the fascinating brewhouse and stable yard.  The site has also improved its coach parking facilities making it easier for groups of all types to visit the historic and highly beautiful house and gardens.

The event on 25th June will include a show’round of the new facilities, a tour of the house and gardens as well a delicious lunch in their new café. Attendees will also be invited to see local attractions nearby to Gilbert White and the Oates Collection.

Kimberley James is the Marketing Manager of Gilbert White and the Oates Collections:

‘We’re so pleased to be able to offer groups these new facilities – it makes a visit to our attraction even better and will help visitors enjoy the tremendous story of Gilbert White and the incredible Oates Collections.

‘And with regards to the many improvements on-site, we would like to have the feedback from the tour planners as to what they think and of course how we can help their groups in future,’ says Kim.

Once the home of internationally known naturalist Rev Gilbert White - renowned for his life-long investigation of the natural world - it is set in the very landscape that inspired his famous work The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne.

Gilbert White also houses the fascinating Oates Collections celebrating two very different explorers of the natural world - including Captain Oates of the tragic Scott Expedition to the Antarctic. And it's just around the corner from the home of world famous icon and writer Jane Austen, in nearby Chawton Village.

The attraction has been awarded a HLF grant which has enabled the development of the house, museum, shop, cafe and parking area. This means the site can now welcome groups as well as independent visitors throughout the year. The grant has allowed the Museum to restore buildings built by the Rev Gilbert White, including his stable yard and brew-house, and means that the whole site is now being opened up to the public - including its library after more than 200 years. The stable yard will now become an attractive entrance to the Museum and offers a range of new facilities for residents of the village of Selborne and for visitors - including a new shop and café, and new displays and exhibits.

Coach and tour operators and GTOS wishing to attend this exciting event on Monday 25th June should email steve@stevereedtourism.co.uk  or telephone [01420] 560288. Places are limited and subject to availability.
